뉴욕과 대만을 기반으로 하는 건축, 인테리어, 산업, 비주얼 및 보석 디자인 스튜디오 J.C. Architecture는 종합 디자인 회사로, 대만의 인테리어 디자인 상을 포함, 전 세계적 으로 영향력 있는 유명 어워드를 수차례 수상했다. 스튜디오의 설립자인 Johnny Chiu는 미국, 호주, 스웨덴 등 해외 6개국 이상에서 거주하며 일을 했고 디자인 관련 강연으로 유수의 대학으로부터 강연 요청을 받기도 했다. 사회와 인간, 그리고 공간의 상호작용을 통해 좋은 디자인 작업이 이루어진다고 믿는 그는, 한 가족의 내력을 고스란히 간직한 6층짜리 주거용 건물의 1, 2층을 젊은이들이 즐겨 찾는 heritage Bakery & Cafe로 꾸몄다.

 

본래의 주거용 건물이었던 이곳은 세대에서 세대를 거쳐 내려오다가 클라이언트인 Sally Song의 의뢰로 베이커리 겸 카페로 거듭났다. 건물이 위치한 Hankou 거리는 카메라와 카메라 부품 등을 취급하는 소매상들의 중심지이기도 히다. 이 거리에서 J.C. Architecture의 손을 거쳐 재탄생한 Heritage Bakery & Cafe는 젊은 여행자와 학생들의 만남의 장소가 되었고, 이곳으로 인해 이웃한 상권들도 활기를 되찾을 수 있었다. 이름이 품고 있듯, Heritage Bakery & Cafe는 오랜 기간의 역사를 간직한 유산과도 같은 요소가 많이 남아있다. 

 

디자이너는 이곳의 높지만 좁고 깊은 건물 형태로 인해 카페 내부를 마치 복도와도 같은 컨셉으로 꾸몄다. 또한, 전면부의 커다란 창을 통해 Hankou 거리를 볼 수 있도록 했으며, 이로 인해 길거리 분위기를 그대로 연장시켜 카페 내부로 끌어들인 듯한 효과를 가질 수 있었다. 건물 자체가 지닌 역사성과 그 흔적을 담아내기 위해 내부공간에도 건물의 적벽돌과 타일 등을 그대로 노출시켰고, 이를 통해 오래된 것이 지닌 아름다움을 현세대에서도 표현해냈다. 깊숙한 형태의 실내 공간에 확장감을 주기 위해 화이트 타일과 밝은 원목 소재를 곳곳에 활용했고 1층의 천정 일부를 개방했다. 오래된 트렁크나 캐비닛, 슈트 케이스 등 Sally Song의 할아버지로부터 물려받은 물건들이 한 켠을 차지하고 있으며 공간의 한쪽 벽면은 오래된 창 프레임, 서랍, 그릴 등을 설치해 화이트 컬러로 멋을 냈다. J.C. Architecture의 설립자이자 리드 디자이너인 Johnny Chiu는 한때는 빛이 났지만 지금은 소실된 소품들, 클라이언트의 선대로부터 물려받은 ‘유산(Heritage)’이 지닌 아름다움과 역사성을 공간 안에 담아내기를 원했고, 이곳을 찾는 많은 이들의 호평이 그 노력의 성공을 증명한다.

 

In its previous life, a residential building passed on from generation to generation is the chosen site for the bakery and café owner, Sally Song. Later on, the street became a hub for camera and gadgets-alike retailers. As the neighborhood revitalizes and becomes a destination for young travelers and students meet-up place, we aimed to open the six floor shophouse as a Bakery & Cafe place. Inspired by the height and narrowness of the site, we envisioned the space as an alleyway, a continuation of the streetscape in Taipei city. Aims to recapture the traces of building’s history, exposes its bare walls full of red bricks and tiles to the space, purposely to reveal the old time beauty to the present. In reference to outdoor farmer's market and its daily preparations, we inserted a vending stall-like structure within a wooden box, as crates are used to deliver the fresh goods. Also relate to the neighborhood surrounded by camera shops features, we use industrial details such as the metal structures the overlap each other giving a depth perception of a viewfinder. Tables are hung along the wall as street light posts, while a long family style table bridges over the void that links the first and second floor. Along the void we added a vertical mural, a concrete layer to display future artist works and bakery’s daily special. Engaging a combination of traditional and raw style in high contrast with new and modern materials, Heritage Bakery & Cafe is where people take their daily commute, the alley like space become a pleasant stop for quick meals, coffee, or small gatherings. Signs of the memories and times be created and passed through generations in the space, is now timeless and beautiful.
